I think that flipped lessons are a valuable tool for teachers. Students are so in tune with technology and often get bored without it, so if we can harness that power for the good of education, we can improve student experience. I also believe that it is really valuable for students to have 24/7 access to a vital piece of instruction to use as a study aid, review material or for reference in the future. That way, they can look back whenever they need to.
While the transition into using technology and flipped lessons may be tough for some teachers at first, I believe that they will eventually come to understand their worth and utilize them. Apps like Screencast-o-matic and EDpuzzle make utilizing technology so easy that, with a little time spent playing around, one can figure it out rather quickly.
One issue I have with flipped lessons are that they are tough to create for my subject. We spend most of our time talking about novels and abstract concepts like themes, motifs, and other literary devices. It’s hard to create a video to explain those. I could utilize flipped lessons for Grammar units or essay writing, but it would be hard to completely flip my entire classroom model. Facilitating discussion and interaction is a key element within my classroom and putting that online would take away some of the collaboration needed to discover elements of the text. Acting a play out just isn't the same when you're acting for a video camera as when you are acting in front of the class.
